Faustina and I enjoy ranking the level of awkward proposals in movies. I recently realized that we have never filmed a proposal scene in any of our own films. We will get our chance to film our own awkward proposal scene in Fabiola. But before we get to that, here are a few of the most awkward proposals that I have seen in film.

Pride And Prejudice: First Tell Her How Much You Hate The Fact That You Are In Love With Her Then Ask Her To Marry You

This is propably the awkwardest proposal caught in a movie. You almost can't get worse than this. And what makes it the perfect awkward proposal is that the man is refused. Here Mr. Darcy literally says that he hates the fact that he's in love with Lizzy but asks her to marry him all the same. Elizabeth is still so angry with the fact that he intentionally separated his friend from her sister so the proposal goes down the route of each side explaining that situation. Mr. Darcy leaves in a storm and the two seem to have only come to an agreement that their dislike for each other is mutual.

David Copperfield: Do Anything To Please Her Even If Its Holding The Dog That Doesn't Really Like You While You Do It

This is probably one of the most awkward proposals in movies. David has finally mustered enough courage to ask Dora to marry him and she is not making it easy. She points out her immaturity and how unmarrageable she really is. David says that he would like to ask her something and she hands him her silly dog and asks him to ask it using the dog as a puppet.

David obliges but once he gets to the "I think that I might die without you part" she takes him literally and declares "Oh No! Don't die!" David proceeds with his proposal but once he gets to his knee, someone interrupts and tells David that he is needed immediately. Dora stupidly reminds him that he never did ask her anything making the awkward proposal just that much more uncomfortable.

Emma: Remind The Gentleman Who He Should Be Proposing To

After spending an unenjoyable evening trying to avoid the company of her absent friend's match, Emma ends up in the carriage on her way home with him. Here he expresses his love for her. Emma blows him off my reminding him of his attachment to her friend and explaining that he is only speaking to her now is because he must have been drinking. Mr. Elton says the the does not know what she is talking about and says that he was only ever showing kindness to Hariett was out of respect for Emma. After Emma refuses him, she has the embarrassing task of telling her friend that he was never interested in her.

Beyond The Mask: Explain How Much Of A Bad Fit You Are, Confess Your Unworthiness Then Ask Her

After having murdered someone and fresh off of burying the evidence, Will Reynolds raps on the door of the woman he loves and confesses that the is a bad man and not worthy of her. After this brief confession, he asks her to marry him. Charlotte is relieved at the confession as she has suspected some odd behavior but is very surprised by the follow up proposal. She decides that she must have more time to think about it before answering.

Wives And Daughters: Due To The 6 Foot Distance This One Could Be Called The Covid Proposal

What makes this one of the most awkward proposals in movies is the Covid-like distance. Because his family has contracted scarlett fever, Roger promises Molly's father that he will stay away until the illness passes. But Roger cannot help tell Molly farewell before he returns to Africa. So at a six foot distance, Roger basically shouts a proposal to Molly who gladly accepts.

Little Women: Stress How Life Threatening The Match Would Be By Saying That You Would Certainly Kill Each Other

What makes this an awkward proposal is that Laurie is everything that Jo wants but she turns him down because she doesn’t want their friendship to change. In her desire to convince him to see it the way she does she says that they would kill each other. Laurie then promises in all arguments he will let her win. She still turns him down. Laurie is shocked by the refusal and immediate jealousy for her future husband sets in. Jo tries to repair the damage but their friendship will from henceforth be awkward.

Anne Of Green Gables: Of Course Anne Would Find An Interesting Way To Open A Proposal. When In Doubt, Kick Him

Morgan Harris receives quite the blow when he tries to stop Anne from walking away. After having seriously kicked him even she is shocked by her action. Anne gives him a minute to explain himself then is shocked that he was chasing her down to propose to her. Anne politely refuses and the two part as friends. Mr. Harris is certainly disappointed because he really does love Anne unlike the other women he is with. Anne is sure that she has made the right decision even though he was the kind of man that she said that she wanted earlier.  

Awkward Proposals In Movies: Filming Our Own In Fabiola

I did not realize it until recently, but we have never filmed a proposal scene. Well, Grisly Grisell may count but it was also an awkward proposal as Leonard begs his wife not to enter a convent. Since their marriage was arranged and forced to happen I don't think that it counts. In Fabiola though, we will get our chance.

The consecrated virgin St. Agnes calmly replies that any time would be inappropriate time to speak in such a manner. "I am sorry to hear it, because you are looking at a woman who is hopelessly in love with Someone else."
