Inspired by Other Patriotic Film Favorites

To help create the look, I thought back to the beautiful costumes in Beyond the Mask and The Scarlet Pimpernel. The timeless styles from these films and our other patriotic film favorites inspired outfits that felt perfect for the occasion without needing to be absolutely period accurate.

Ladies' Colonial Formal Outfit

I had wanted to order a dress from Linen Vibes for quite some time, so this event provided the perfect excuse. I found a deep blue dress in their Victorian collection. Although it isn't exactly from the colonial period, the V-shaped waistline reminded me of late 18th-century fashion and complemented the colonial-inspired look beautifully.

I already owned a pair of black Victorian shoes from End of the Santa Fe Trail, and they worked wonderfully with the outfit. A few carefully chosen accessories brought everything together.

Men's Colonial Formal Outfit

Once my outfit was complete, it was Becket's turn to assemble his colonial-inspired formalwear.

After I teased Becket by putting a pink colonial suit in the shopping cart, he decided to invest in higher-quality clothing because he wanted pieces that could be worn for weddings, formal dinners, patriotic celebrations, and other special occasions—not just a single event.

His jacket with coattails, red vest, white dress shirt, and shoes all came from Suits Outlets, while the remaining accessories came from Amazon.

Colonial Formal Attire Inspired by Other Patriotic Films

One of the most enjoyable parts of preparing for the Young Washington premiere was drawing inspiration from some of our favorite patriotic films. Rather than wearing theatrical costumes, we wanted outfits that captured the elegance of the colonial era while remaining modest, comfortable, and practical enough to wear again.

The graceful dresses and refined gentlemen's clothing in Beyond the Mask provided wonderful inspiration for creating a look that felt authentic without being overly elaborate. We also admired the timeless style featured in The Scarlet Pimpernel. Although that story takes place during the French Revolution rather than Colonial America, its late 18th-century fashions share many similarities with the clothing worn during America's founding era.
