Keeping Angora Rabbits Clean

by Jennifer
(UK)

Hi there! I've had my angora bunny for a while and I still don't really know how to combat this problem! My bunny ruffles the hay everytime and it always get stuck everywhere under her butt, her feet and belly and chin and she hates it when I start pulling the hay out of her. It's specially difficult with the smaller pieces of hay. How do I prevent this from happening? Or is it even possible to prevent it from happening?

Also my bunny hates being brushed - what are some tips to make it more enjoyable for her and to stop her running away? Thank you!

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for reaching out!

I used to give my first angora straw and hay for bedding but then I realized that it was not worth giving him because I sent more time pulling it out or throwing away his coat after a shaving than he did enjoyed it. Yes, it seems that they intentionally stick it to themselves as an ornament. I came to the conclusion that it is impossible to keep from happening. Instead, now I give them blankets as bedding. They tear it up and urinate in it but it does not get in their hair! Get a few flannels or old blankets from the thrift store and use this instead. Use hay sparingly as a treat packed inside of a toilet paper roll and ONLY after they have been shaved.

I also used to brush my first angora out because I read that they need lots of grooming. I was pulling hair out and it was an uncomfortable experience for the rabbit. I brought this up to an angora mentor/friend who then told me that more hair is pulled out when brushing then that it is better to let them grow a few mats that can be simply cut and thrown away than spending unenjoyable hours grooming. Rather, let the rabbit enjoy treats while you cut mats out of their hair then grooming them.

Hope this helps! I really enjoyed the photos of your bunny! She is so cute!
